Police arrested Synod Moderator Rev Mezuwa Banda, Synod general-secretary Rev Levi Nyondo and his deputy Rev Maurice Munthali after a funeral service of former health minister Prof Moses Chirambo.
The three were being kept at Mzuzu Police station on Friday evening.
“We have been picked by police,” Rev Munthali told Nyasa Times through telephone.
The three clerics were arrested after their sermon during the funeral service of the former health minister and Rumphi central legislator.
They are accused of uttering “treasonous words.”
According to Nyasa Times correspondent who attended the funeral service, Rev Mezuwa Banda said the church would not be intimidated and will continue to proclaim the truth.
He said the church was vigilant to fight against injustice during the one party dictatorship and continued its prophetic role during the UDF regime and that would not be intimidated to stop doing the same during the DPP government.
Rev Nyondo speaking at the funeral said the northern region has been crying for quota system of education imposed by the Mutharika administration and that losing one of the educated son of the north, was a great loss to the country and the region.
He pointed out that late Prof Chirambo was sacked from the cabinet and his dismissal may have shocked him.
Rev Munthali supported by emphasizing that Malawians should get “in touch with the heaven”.
Mzuzu police spokesman Edward Longwe could not give immediate comment on the arrest, saying “investigations were going on”.
