Mr. Gboyega Isiaka, The Peoples Party of Nigeria governorship candidate in Ogun State, has described the outcome of the National Assembly elections in the state as an indication that the Peoples Democratic Party is finished in the state.
Isiaka led the group that defected from the PDP to PPN following the crisis that arose over the outcome of the PDP primaries in the state.
Isiaka, in an interview with journalists in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, on Wednesday, commended the PPN for winning the Imeko Afon Federal Constituency.
He described the performance of the PPN in the state as very impressive considering the challenges encountered by the party and the short time it entered the electoral race.
“It is a shame that the PDP did not win any seat at the elections in the state. It is an indication that the PDP is finished in Ogun State. If the party presented what one can describe as their best team which included the daughter of the former President and the number four citizen in the country for elections and they lost, it shows you the position of the party in the state today,” he stated.
He denied that pressures were being mounted on him to step down in a proposed planned merger between the PPN and the PDP to strengthen the ruling party in the remaining elections.
He vowed not to step down for the PDP candidate, Chief Adetunji Olurin, while describing the ongoing discussions in some quarters for the two political parties to collaborate as part of the possibilities in politics.
“If there is any ongoing discussions for us to collaborate, this is possible in politics but I need to inform you that nobody has put pressure on me; as a stronger candidate, I cannot be asked to step down for the weaker one,” Isiaka said.
The Secretary of the PDP in Ogun State, Mr. Semiu Sodipo, in his reactions insisted that the party was in existence and getting stronger in the state.
He attributed the defeat of the PDP in the state in the National Assembly elections to the alleged poor performance of the Otunba Gbenga Daniel-led administration in the last eight years.
He said the people of the state were fed up with the poor performance of the Daniel administration in the state, a development that led to the massive votes for the opposition.
‘It is rather, the PPN as a political party that is not in existence in Ogun State. The party came far third in the last elections in spite of the state government machinery and the machinery of the 20 local government areas it has at its disposal.
“We have been grappling with the problem of no enough time to educate the electorate, we will intensify efforts at enlightening the electorate that we have a new PDP and that they should forget about what happened in the past. The electorate are still linking us with those who misruled the state and are no longer in the party,” he stated.
