The Lagos State Government on Thursday urged the Federal Government to urgently fix the Apapa-Oshodi Express-road because
of its importance to the state and the national economy.
The Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Aderemi Ibirogba, made the call in an interview with newsmen in Lagos.
Ibirogba said the man-hours being lost to traffic congestion on the road as a result of its deplorable state had a colossal effect on the economy.
The expressway linking the Ports of Lagos to other parts of the metropolis and the rest of Nigeria is filled with deep potholes hampering vehicular movement.
According to the commissioner, the early fixing of the road will help the national economy as more consignments would be moved and business transactions enhanced.
``While the State Government tries to manage the traffic challenges thrown up by the situation, what is needed to end the suffering on the road is total reconstruction,’’ he said.Ibirogba also called on the government through the Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA), should repair other federal roads in the state.
He noted that the bad state of most of federal roads in the metropolis had cost residents and the state government a lot.
``It is not Apapa-Oshodi Expressway alone that is in bad shape. Most of the federal roads in Lagos are in terrible state of disrepair, including the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway.
``The Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway nearly caved in the other day it rained. There is need for the Federal Government to quickly intervene,’’ he said.
