Nigeria will be represented at the forthcoming Commonwealth U-17 handball championship in Yaounde, Cameroon, by male and female teams from the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, and Niger State.
Information released by the secretary of the Handball Federation of Nigeria, Olusola Luke, said another team would also represent the nation at the African Zone III handball challenge in Cote d‘Ivoire. He said further that the two teams from both states were selected based on their impressive performances in the past competitions and have been in camp since Thursday.
He said, ”We are working hard to make sure the male and female teams do well in Cameroon. The federation is aware of the challenges of the Commonwealth championship and it has put in place all what the teams need to lift the name of Nigeria.”
President of the federation, Alhaji Yusuf Dauda, said the Commonwealth Championship would run from August 25 to September 5 while the African Zone III Handball Championship would be held from August 22 to 29.
He assured that the federation would not drop its preference for grassroots development of the game as more young talents were being targeted.
He said, ”The board is trying its best to develop more young players by giving them the opportunity to play at the higher level. It is the only way that they can compete on the bigger stage and understand the modern technique of the game. We want them to go and play in international competitions and return home with medals.
”With the type of talents we discovered in the last championship we played in Minna, Niger State, I can say confidently that we are making progress and with the commitment of the board, Nigeria will be among the best in the sport.”
