Two die in Bauchi State earth dam

A 30-year-old man, Muhammuda Babaji and a teenager, Yahuza Baraya, died at the weekend in a stagnant earth dam in Gumau Village, in Toro Local Government Area of Bauchi State.
It was gathered that Muhammuda Babaji got drowned at the dam while taking his bath in preparation for Friday Juma’at prayers.

Sympathisers who gathered at the scene of the incident were further thrown into confusion and mourning when Mr Baraya, jumped into the dam in an attempt to save Mr Babaji, but got drowned too.

The sad incident came barely five days after a 13 year old JSS 1 student of Excellence Model Academy who went to swim in a pond in Lushi, Yelwa, a sub-urb of Bauchi Metropolis died in the pond.

The earth dam was newly constructed near Gumau village by the Upper Benue River Basin Development Authority for cattle breeders.

Effort by the Fire Service from Toro Local Government Area to save the two victims could not yield any positive result.

Speaking at the scene of the incident, a resident, Muhammadu Mai Dawa who described the incident as very pathetic and unfortunate called on the people to be cautious while taking their bath at the site.

He particularly advised parents in the area to prevent their children from swimming in the dam and called on the state government to, as a matter of urgency, fence the area to prevent future occurrence.
