Catholic bishops in Nigeria have blamed the Governor of Central Bank, Malam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi for failing to consult across the country before introducing the controversial Islamic banking in Nigeria
Under the aegis of the Ibadan Ecclesiastical Province, the bishops at the end of a meeting in Ede, Osun State, called on the federal government to enlighten Nigerians on the Islamic banking.
In a communiqué by Rev Felix Alaba Job and Rev. Felix Ajakaye, President and Secretary of the province respectively, at the end of the meeting, said: “In a democracy, Nigerians should have been allowed to discuss such an important and sensitive issue before the CBN Governor, Malam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, would make a pronouncement on it which sounded much like a law.
“Reactions to the proposed Islamic banking have shown how divisive such an issue, important and useful though it may be, can be when it is not carefully presented.”
The bishop described the manner the CBN governor presented the issue of Islamic banking, which they say has religious implications as “faulty and tantamount to governance by ambush.’’
On the security threat Boko Haram sect, the bishops said “The federal government approach to this issue has been decisive in some ways but inadequate in others. We have seen the government seeming to speak from both sides of the mouth on whether or not to negotiate with the Boko Haram. The issue of amnesty has also been raised by some eminent Nigerians, the so called ‘diplomatic approach’ at the expense of Nigerians lives, peace and tranquility is unacceptable.”
